Chapter 15
Ava
What Ava thought was going to be an amusing couple of days as she tripped up the suitors with her sharp wit, riding skills, and generally large personality was turning into a chore. Or rather a bore. No, that wasn’t quite it either.
The problem was she couldn’t stop thinking about Henry. It didn’t exactly help that he was along for the ride, literally. But she’d wanted him there. In fact, she’d selected the horses specially and was hoping he’d join in when he saw his old favorite, Tammy. She’d practically been a filly when she came to the stable. But she wasn’t expecting a welling of feeling to come over her as Frederick left them in the dust and Alistair brought up the rear, leaving just the two of them together. Ava and Henry, as it had always been. As she’d always believed it would be. For that moment, she pretended he was one of the suitors in the running. She dreamed of the two of them getting married. But it was just that, a dream, one that carried into her sleep after the long day.
When she woke up the next morning, feeling warm and content in her bed, her lady’s maid reminded her she was to spend portions of the day with each of the suitors individually.
She’d been foolish, naïve, hopeful.
Dreams were not reality.
Ava harrumphed and rolled over.
Gray sky shone through the window. It was no use trying to avoid it. There was no getting out of it. Unless she ran away. She shoved the idea from her mind as she pulled on her outfit: a light sweater and fitted pants. She wore a stylish pair of boots that she could run in, should the need arise and she actually had the opportunity to run away. Then she laughed sadly. That wouldn’t happen.
The lady’s maid outlined the agenda for the day. She was to have breakfast with Alistair, lunch with Oscar, and dinner with Frederick. It all sounded dreadful. She regretted not having any time with Henry. He couldn’t rightfully be her chaperone on what was essentially a date between each of the suitors in turn.
She plodded through the hall to the drawing room where the queen entertained the suitors and likely warned them that Ava was a handful. Before entering, she paused outside by the window opposite the door.
For a moment, she let herself daydream about life with Henry beyond the palace bubble.
“Penny for your thoughts?” her brother’s voice said from behind.
She turned slowly around to find him standing there, alone. “Speaking of Penny, where is she?” Ava asked.
“Not feeling well, I’m afraid. She should be recovering soon, I imagine.”
“Is there anything she needs or—”
Oliver shook his head quickly. “No, no. She—” he stammered. “She’ll be fine. Thank you though. I’ll let her know you asked after her.” Oliver was ordinarily a bit of a rascal and fun-loving, but lately, he’d become serious, almost brooding. With all his responsibilities back home, maybe their marriage was in trouble. But that didn’t explain what they were doing in London instead of Concordia.
